A Quick Word

What you will find here is the constantly changing library of images I am creating. Many days there is no rhyme or reason to what I shoot and it is simply for fun. Other times I have a specific idea or project in mind that will occupy my mind until it is fully realized and finished. Take a look around, feel free to critique my work and don’t forget to say ‘Hi’ every now and then.

Sunday at the Rock Hall

May 19, 2013

The weather today had the perfect balance of cool air mixed with hot sun. To not have been taking photos somewhere outdoors would have been a crime! Somehow I have never visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for picture taking, so I decided to head down and get inspired by the incredible architecture and rock history held within the glass pyramid. There weren't many people out, and that allowed me to go really wide and still maintain a clean frame. The only challenge was having a huge construction lift parked at the bottom of the hill where the building meets the lake - it obstructed the view of many potentially great shots. I opted to shoot around it rather than have to edit it out later. If you have never been to the Rock Hall I highly recommend it! Admission information can be found here.

Countdown for the PD Travel Photo Awards

March 25, 2013

The travel photo contest hosted by the Cleveland Plain Dealer garnered over 6k entries last year, and this year that number will likely grow. Needless to say my photos will be facing some stiff competition from other local people who have traveled near and far to capture their best shots. The results come out on Sunday, April 21st and the prizes are very, very nice. Read about it here.

Intro to 2013

March 25, 2013

Where has the time gone!? 2013 has been a relative beehive of activity so far - a new job, new routines, new friends - which is why I haven't been out to take many photos lately. The cold weather doesn't exactly get the outdoor motivation going either, but hopefully the warm weather will greet us soon and take away these winter blues! Until then, stay tuned for updates and possibly even a new website layout.

Amsterdam

So much to say about Amsterdam that I don't even know where to start! Instead, just check out the latest additions on this page, and also the Urban gallery!

Familiar Territory

September 29, 2012

So back to Huntington I go, as usual, to catch a sunset after rainfall. It was cool and humid; you could see the city at a distance with the wavy air diffusing the straight lines on the buildings. I usually shoot at polar ends of the beach area, looking either downtown across the lake or on the western end of the beach where it becomes private property. I've noticed the private sign has been down for some time now, but I've chosen not to put it back up because the extra 30 feet of walkable space allows for better shots. The western end is where Another Lake Erie Sunset was taken, looking towards Bay Village. But I think its time to haunt another place along the lake. Although it will be tempting to continually re-visit Huntington, there are plenty more locations yet to see along the shoreline. Recommendations would be appreciated.

Here Comes the Chill

September 26, 2012

It was windy and raining this past weekend, but it felt like a good time to be outside and catching some waves at the lake. Not surprisingly I was the only person in sight, crouching with an umbrella carefully unpacking the camera and trying hard to not get it wet - like that was gonna happen. The splashes and the rain continued as I continued to wipe of the lens, and after many, many waves I was able to catch what I was looking for. Getting outdoors in different conditions is a something I love to do, since each environment has its own unique feeling and direction, and the feeling that day could be described as 'connected' and 'satisfying'. Per the usual Huntington Beach, here's the latest shot.

They Only Come Out at Night

September 17, 2012

There is something about the darkness that excites me, creating a pleasant tension of joy and fear. Combine that with photography and you have one very happy guy! I was at Observatory Park over the weekend, which was a new moon, and got to revel being in the presence of thousands of beautiful stars that cannot be seen with the naked eye in the city light. These stars remind me of mankind's origins, for like the plants and rocks and water, we too are born from the gases and dust that are now located millions of miles away. As a tribute to them, I give you my latest shot

The Pier's Edge

September 09, 2012

There's is nothing quite like the wind on my face to make me feel alive. It is an unspoken joy, something emotional and hard to describe that satisfies a craving to be one with all the other creatures touching the same current of air. A powerful lake breeze on a bright and beautiful Saturday afternoon is also a great excuse to get out and take photos at Huntington Beach, territory I have re-visited dozens of times with endless satisfaction. I wonder if any of the seagulls were wishing to be human while I was wishing to be one of them.

I'm So High Right Now!

August 23, 2012

Over the weekend I had the opportunity to visit a legendary icon of Cleveland, the Terminal Tower. Not only did I get to go inside, but along with other CPS members eager to get super high sunset photos, I went up to the 44th floor and outdoors! It was an incredible experience and sunset, enhanced even more by knowing that not many people get to see and feel what it's like to be at the very top of the city looking out at the horizon. Read about the observation deck.

Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay

August 6, 2012

Lake Newport in Mill Creek Park is a great spot to relax and take in a sunset. The air is calm, the moon rises over the water, and at sunset any photo of it looks good. This latest shot is a couple second exposure of shadows of the dock pillars rippling on the water.

Work on display at CIA, August - October

July 29, 2012

The Cleveland International Airport, in participation with the Cleveland Photographic Society, is displaying member photos with the subject of people in their place. It is a juried event, and my photo of Thomas has been selected to show. This is my first showing at a juried event and I am excited to see it displayed with the other selections. I will post an official link when I get it.

Summer at the Lake, from May

July 29, 2012

It is possible to visit the same location dozens of times and always return with completely unique photos, and this holds true for Huntington Beach in Bay Village. The variety of weather seen within one full year of seasons along Lake Erie is uncanny and unpredictable, offering plenty of opportunities to challenge yourself in either heat and sand, or cold and snow. This photo was taken in May of this year and looks quite tropical to me! Connect the dots with the two groups of people and you will see the Cleveland downtown skyline in the distance.

Work on display in June

June 4, 2012

During the month of May I will be displaying photos at Salon Mingle in Warren, Ohio. There will be 7 full-size prints on display, all of which are landscapes taken in Nevada and California in late 2011. The prints will be matted and priced to sell, from only 40-60 dollars. Please stop by to check them out!

Chicago in a day

May 28, 2012

This Memorial Day weekend gave me an opportunity for a road trip to Chicago, the infamous windy city that I have never seen. Saturday was non-stop shooting all day outdoors, and I must have walked 20 miles...or at least it felt like it. Beer is a great motivator to continue toughing it out in the heat. This was a great learning experience for me because it showed me how important sleep is for taking creative and successful photos. Next time I won't decide to drive 7 hours on no sleep and then take photos for 12 hours.

2 New Images

April 26, 2012

There are 2 new photos up on the Macro portfolio guranteed to blow your mind. Even the smallest of bubbles in ice contain worlds of detail, beauty and possibility. These phots were taken using my 18-55mm lens with a reverse lens mount, a tripod, a dish of frozen water and a light beneath the dish. With the proper stability and focus, there is plenty time to compose images with the bubbles and experiment with lighting.

CPS Membership

April 19, 2012

I'm a new member of the Cleveland Photographic Society as of yesterday! There are many events and competitions I hope to be a part of over the next couple of years with the CPS, which will give me determination to keep taking consistently good photos. You can visit them here: Cleveland Photographic Society.

2 new images

April 15, 2012

The two newest photos were taken in Athens, OH on Easter Weekend. I went to visit my sister and we did some walking and wandering around campus which led us to where the shots were taken. The full moon was incredible!

11 New Images

April 4, 2012

There are some new photos up in the Urban and Nature portfolios, as well as the brand new Macro portfolio. They were taken during 2 trips: the first to Nevada in late 2011, and the second to Miami Beach earlier this year. I will be taking many more creative macro shots in the near future, so keep your eyes open for those!

Site Maintenance

April 3, 2012

It's time to implement the first set of real changes to the website. New things include more thumbnails for Latest Additions, more book previews, a News & Update section, a new Macro image gallery, and an easier contact method. The People gallery was removed since the Macro images are higher in count and interest. Opinion Corner was removed since I have retired from Facebook at the moment.

These are some of my favorite images from 'This is Your Brain on Drugs'. If you look closely, many of the images have strange faces with alien-like features, created by the symmetrical curves of color.

About Alex

Photography is something that allows me to explore the world without limit. From the widest mountain-top vistas to the closest macros of water and smoke in my apartment, every venue is a potential location for the next "Look what I got" shot. Photo of Alex

The satisfaction of seeing the final image, crafted from the shutter click to the software clicks, is what really makes my work feel like art. I enjoy percolating over a photo and deciding where to take it, and the challege of turning my creative vision into the finished work.
